Den Sorte Enke
Brewery: Refsvindinge Bryggeri
Type: Sweet Stout
Alcohol: 5.7%
Country: Denmark
Pours jet black with a kind of decent tan head that settles and sticks around. Aroma is very sweet and smells of licorice, like when you first open a bag of sweet black licorice. The taste is very much the same, like drinking a glass of the aforementioned licorice. I should stop here and confess...I hate black licorice. I should also confess...I do not hate this beer. Now that is not to say I like it, but I was totally prepared after reading a description to hate this beer. The sweetness of the wheat really saves it here. There is a very strong licorice taste but it is balanced by a very very sweet taste, and a just barely noticeable roasted flavor. The mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth. Now don't get me wrong, this is not an outstanding beer, but I was pleasantly surprised. This combo actually works and if you are a fan of sweet black licorice you would probably dig this beer.
