Zeitgeist
Type: Schwarzbier
Alcohol: 4.9%
Country: Scotland I love a good scwarzbier, in fact I can say it is by far my favorite kind of lager. I mean seriously…it might be the only kind of lager I really "enjoy". So I was happy to see a brew dog version of it pop up in the supermarket. Pours nice and schwarz (black), with a really nice two finger head. The tan head doesn't stick around at the party for long but it does leave behind a some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark and roasted, little bit of coffee and smoke with an ever present smell of lager yeast. The taste was actually a bit of a surprise. Most schwarzbiers I have tried are velvety smooth with emphasis on roasted barley and chocolate malt taste. The nice dark roasted taste is there, in fact it is very present, along with a nice chocolate coffee hint, but this coffee is bitter! The taste of zeitgeist is immediately taken over by the bitterness, you can even pick out a bit of citrusy hop bite in the background. It is almost like drinking a black IPA at times. Maybe this is an Indian Schwarz Lager? ISL, I just invented a new beer type…or I suppose brew dog did, but dibs on the name! Not a bad glass of schwarz but I think that bitterness is going to have to grow on me. Good thing there is plenty more at the supermarket for me to make up my mind on.
