I have been meaning to check out Amager Bryghus's "Sinner Series" for quite a while now. Now what more fitting beer to kick off my sinning with then a decadent Imperial Stout. Now I am going to add in the quote from the bottle just because I think they did such a good job writing the descriptions for this series. If you want to know more about the sinner series visit their website here. (helps if you can read in Danish)
We thought about this for a long time: what kinda beer would give us the utmost feeling of pride in The Sinner Series? Well, if you know Amager Bryghus you already know that Imperial Stouts have a special place in our hearts. So “Pride” simply had to be an Imperial Stout. What is special about this take on the style is that we boiled the h… out of it. Actually we boiled it for 6 hours, making for a richer and fuller version. We would never dare calling this the perfect Imperial Stout - that would be taking pride way too close to hubris! But we hope you enjoy it nonetheless. We’re not proud to be sinners, but at least we’re open about it
Pours a really dense black with a decent one finger tan head. It settles out quick leaving just a little tan circle around the edge of the beer. Pretty standard imperial stout smell, dark malts, little bit of anise/licorice, and just a tiny tiny bit of some herbal hops sneaking in the back. The taste is pretty damn rich. Dark bitter chocolate, black licorice, and surprisingly a decent amount of some kind of citrusy hops. A lot of sweetness still makes it through, and as it warmed up a lot of alcohol snuck into the aftertaste. It was certainly the way to kick this series off for me. I love a good imperial stout, just like Amager. I also agree this isn't the perfect imperial stout but it is pretty good.
