Orange Yuzu Glad I Said Porter
Brewery: Mikkeller
Type: Porter
Alcohol: 6%
Country: Denmark
Everyone knows I love a punny beer name. Everyone also know I love Mikkller beer. So this was a no brainer for me. I am actually pretty sure I have never had yuzu before. I like American porters with that nice bit of citrusy hop taste in the background. That is what I am hoping the yuzu brings, as it is described as a cross between orange and grapefruit. This beer is also brewed with lactose, so interested to see what that brings to the table. Ok I am too curious to write any more of this, have to crack the bottle open!
Pours dark and black, huge two finger tan head. Stacks up big and, sticks to the sides of the glass and makes some great curtains. Nose is dark and roasty. Very stereotypical porter smell, lots of roasted barley, bitter chocolate, and a touch of something sweet and citrusy, like candied orange peel. The taste is up front a very good porter. A lot of smooth dark coffee, roasted dark malts, and actually quite a bit of sweet and creaminess from the lactose. The aftertaste is where you pick up that yuzu. It is a sort of slightly sour citrusy taste. I would describe it as a very grapefruit juice type taste, less sour but very much like that. I don't really see this as orange flavor, to me far more in the sour grapefruit end of the citrus spectrum, but I have heard people say they taste orange. The mouthfeel is odd. It has a mid to high because of the porter aspect, and the lactose sugar. But it feels almost watered down a bit. Something with the yuzu taste. This is also a relatively bitter porter. It is not a big hop bitterness but almost a sour bitterness, like citrus juice. The best way to describe this is a very nice sweet porter, with a shot of grapefruit juice dropped in. Not sure my feelings on this one. It is a cool and interesting beer, but I am not sure I would ever seek out another glass.
