I have been waiting a long time to review this beer. Had my eye on it ever since I moved to Odense in September and started to get really really into craft beer. It was a beer that really interested me as I started to read more and more about beer, and especially barrel aged beers. I saw it in a local beer shop and knew one day an occasion would come along to match the hefty price tag attached to this beer. Well that occasion is my 300th review. This beer deserved more then words, so i did a video to go along with it, hope you will watch and enjoy!
Pours midnight black, I mean it is like looking into a black hole, no light penetrates this beast. Not a very big head, was not expecting much from a monster like this. But it has a little tan head that is there but not for long. The aroma is amazingly complex...intense boozey bourbon mixed with plenty of sweet smelling malty and roasted noted of chocolate and coffee. You can really really smell all 19.3% of alcohol in this beer, but tasting it is another story. The first thing that hits you is the bourbon taste, it smells like bourbon, and it certainly tastes like it too. This is not your normal harsh shot of cowboy bourbon, this beer was aged in buffalo trace bourbon barrels, so it is smooth and intense with a complex flavor. The bourbon flavor mellows out into a smooth oakey vanilla aftertaste mixed with dark sweet roasted grain and bitter and amazing coffee flavor. It coats the mouth like a syrupy oil and the warmth lingers on long after you are done with your sip. After it warms up a bit it really starts to taste like a shot of borbon in a cup of good espresso. I love a good barrel aged imperial stout, and this is certainly one of the best I have ever had, in fact as of publishing it will be my highest rated beer ever. I wish I could have more, but for now I will just sit here and savor what i have left.
